Feathered by Laura Kasischke.

Feathered by Laura Kasischke.
HarperTeen, 2008, 261p, $17.89, 978-0060813178.

There is a sense of foreboding from the start. Three senior girls from suburban Glendale, Illinois fly off to Cancun for Spring break. Terri gets into the bacchanal-like teen environment right away at the Hotel del Sol where the three are staying. Anne and Michelle are more cautious, delighting in the gorgeous sunsets and turquoise ocean. When they meet a friendly stranger in the tiki bar of the hotel and accept a ride with him to visit the ancient Mayan ruins, things start to shift. Anne is apprehensive but Michelle feels a connection to Mr. Anders. In alternating chapters, Anne tells the story from her first person perspective and Michelle’s chapters are in the third person. Although the reader knows something awful has already happened since the plot is a flashback, things are not always what they seem. This cautionary tale infuses suburban teen naiveté, Mayan myths, and the harsh realities of modern life. The writing is both lyrical and eerie. It makes the reader want to yell at the book as people sometimes do at movie screens, “DON'T GO THERE!” The book had me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it. This is an excellent selection for high school libraries and recommended for Tristate Books of Note.

All We Know of Heaven by Jacquelyn Mitchard.

All we know of heaven by Jacquelyn Mitchard.
HarperCollins, 2008, 311p, $16.99, 978-0-06-134578-4.

We all heard the story of the two best friends who were in a car accident: one was in a coma, the other girl died soon after the accident. The girls looked very much alike and due to that, as well as to the injuries, their identities were reversed. The family who buried who they thought was their daughter grieved. They later found out that their daughter was actually the one who survived as was in the coma. The other family had to accept that the girl who was in the coma, who was brain damaged and disfigured, with whom the mother stayed in the hospital around the clock to comfort and watch, was actually their daughter’s best frThis is only in the first part of the book. The rest tells what happens to all the people involved, the boyfriend, the fellow cheerleaders, the parents, brothers and sisters. The author writes a novel about how they grieved, raged, romanced, reacted to tabloids, and continued with life. It is especially the story of Maureen, the one who survived. The author has done her research on how people who are brain damaged can sometimes recover and how their lives can be changed forever. This fictionalized version of this true incident explores what happens to all the people involved. Mitchard in her acknowledgments in the back of the book, points out that only the premise really occurred; the rest is a work of fiction. The story is sometimes sad but also very inspiring. The cover will pull readers right to it; probably girls more than boys. It is a real page turner. I couldn’t put it down.

Well Defined: Vocabulary in Rhyme by Michael Salinger

Salinger, Michael. Well Defined: Vocabulary in Rhyme.
WordSong (Boyds Mill Press), 2009, $16.95, 978-1590786154

The poet Michael Salinger tackles some standardized test vocabulary words and through verse makes the words bloom.
This slim little book contains about 50 vocabulary inspired poems. The first word of each poem begins with the word he’s playing with and the bottom of the page contains the dictionary definition. One personal favorite is
“Pithy”
Pithy gets right to the point
no beating around the bush for her
short and sweet and completely
relevant to the topic at hand
this girl knows what she’s talking about
not one to waste words
being concise for her is a snap
This is your go-to gal
when you need a line or a phrase
that cuts through all the crap

It is clear that the author loves words and brings his talent and love together in “Well Defined.” Salinger invites his reader to continue to write their own word poems. This is a fun-to-read book with great potential in the curriculum. TS

Take the Mummy and Run by Mary Amato

Amato, Mary. Take the Mummy and Run.
Holiday House, 2009, 222p, $16.95, 978-0-8234-2175-6.

Fourth Riot Brothers book. In this installment cousin Amelia comes to visit and brings her own version of mayhem. Together they solve a mystery, find a lost mummy, and have fun at a homemade water park. There is a laugh on every page.

Wilbur and Orville Riot learn that their cousin Amelia will be staying with them for three days. They expect absolute boredom. After all, what does a girl know about fun? What a surprise! She fits right into the general mayhem, whether tracking down a mummy or creating their own water park. Amelia even creates some mayhem of her own. This is the fourth Riot Brothers book.
The cartoon style illustrations add to the humor. There is a bonus section of directions to the games mentioned in the text, the songs the crew sings, and some of their rules.
The type is large, helping make it an easy read. This will attract reluctant boys and anyone who wants a rollicking fun adventure. JT

Copernicus: Founder of Modern Astronomy, rev. ed.

Andronik, Catherine M. Copernicus: founder of modern astronomy, rev. ed.
Enslow, 2009, 128p, $23.95, 978-0-7660-3013-8.

The life and legacy of Nicolaus Copernicus are described, with an emphasis on the scientific contribution he made to human understanding of the universe. Several easy-to-do experiments are included as well.
This is an excellent biography of Copernicus with an emphasis on his breakthrough in understanding that we live in a heliocentric universe. Details of his life are given, but the emphasis is clearly on the science, with half of the book discussing his legacy in light of the work of other scientists who came before and after him. Information is well documented, with numerous footnotes. Four activities appropriate for upper-elementary or middle-school students are included. There is a chronology, a glossary, footnotes, references for further research, and an index, and all are excellent.
The only possible quibble with this book is that the author could have given more information about the many excellent photographs. While she includes an “illustration credits” paragraph on the verso of the title page, it could have been more informative.
The series includes 30 titles, including such figures as Hubble, Einstein, Linnaeus, Darwin, and Pavlov. CK

Lois DUncan by Kimberly Campbell

Campbell, Kimberly. Lois Duncan.
Enslow, 2009, 104p, $31.93, 978-07660-2963-7.

This book covers the story of Lois Duncan’s writing career. It shows how Lois turns her life’s challenges into stories that everyone will enjoy reading.
The author has written an easy to read book for young readers that will certainly keep their attention and present the factual details on the career of a well-known author, Lois Duncan. The factual details are interestingly presented as well as informative and educational.

The inclusion of chronology, chapter notes, several lists, where to obtain more information and a glossary/index make this a useful research tool. The inclusion of web sites for youngsters is also important in school classrooms today.
The flow and balance of both the text and full color visuals are integrated to present a very stimulating book for both young and reluctant readers.
I found it extremely interesting that a neighbor (McKinlay Kantor) informed her at the age of 13 that her writing was pure trash. He then went on to give her advice about how to succeed. She took this advice as well as the knowledge she gained from her photographer parents and went on to become a renowned novelist.
This book is one in the Authors Teens Love series. The series consists of 16 books at this time. The general theme of the series is about noteworthy authors. LM

A Student's Guide to Eugene O'Neill. by Spring Hermann

Hermann, Spring. A Student’s guide to Eugene O’Neill.
Enslow, 2009, 176p, $27.93, 978-0-7660-2886-9.

This is an examination of O’Neill’s plays and how his life inspired his play writing. The author provides analysis of characters and a detailed assessment his play’s impact on society. Occasional black and white photographs highlight the text; includes chronology, chapter notes, glossary, books for further reading, Internet sites, and index.

This title is an examination of O’Neill’s plays and how his life inspired his play writing. The author provides and analysis of the characters in the dramas. There is a detailed assessment of O’Neill’s play’s impact on society and audience reactions to them as well as his influence on other well-known American playwrights such as Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller. Mention of the historical background happening during the productions is a helpful aspect of this book that helps the reader gain perspective. Broadway productions as well as movies produced are discussed. The author also has a chapter about the recent revivals of O’Neill’s plays and the activities at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center for students. Occasional black and white photographs highlight the text in the appropriate places. The end of the book includes a chronology, chapter notes, glossary that has only nine words but most with somewhat lengthy definitions, a list of O’Neill’s major works, a list of books for further reading, Internet sites, and index. This title would be most useful in high schools due to the subject matter in most of O’Neill’s plays. It will be an excellent resource for English classes and for student research. I certainly learned a lot about these plays and this book has encouraged me to become an audience member for them, whenever possible. TW

The Unknowns: a mystery. by Benedict Carey

Carey, Benedict. The Unknowns: a mystery.
Amulet see Abrams, Harry, 2009, 272p, $16.95, 978-0-8109-7991-8.

The least likely group of teenagers ever to come together saves the island of Adjacent from a nuclear power plant plot by using math clues.
Benedict Carey’s unique plot unravels with all of the elements of an entertaining story for young adults: suspense, twists and turns in plot development, unusual characters, a setting that Alfred Hitchcock would love and a theme of saving the environment. When Princess Di and Tom Jones (no kidding!) realize that their math tutor/friend, Mrs. Clarke, is missing, they commence a search, which leads them into nuclear power plant subterfuge. Aided by mathematic clues left by their friend, they elicit the help of the least likely inhabitants of the island, their enemies! Young readers will enjoy trying to figure out the clues, and even if they don’t understand them, will enjoy each exciting moment as Di and Tom attempt to solve the mystery, which threatens their home. We are not distracted by the fact that it is virtually impossible to infiltrate a nuclear power plant. Carey has made it all seem possible with his group of resourceful sleuths. Everybody loves when the downtrodden defeat their enemy, and in The Unknowns, the Folsom Power Plant is defeated in a final scene worthy of a “rockum-stockum” Hollywood production. Carey made math fun, sending a message to the reader that learning math can be useful. Carey’s first novel flows. He is a good storyteller with a talent in math to boot!
Middle school and high school students who have pre-algebra and geometry skills to understand some of the clues will enjoy the blend of mystery and math. MS

Evaluating Web Pages: Techniques to Apply & Questions to Ask

  • Evaluating web pages skillfully requires you to do two things at once:

  • 1. Train your eye and your fingers to employ a series of techniques that help you quickly find what you need to know about web pages;

  • 2. Train your mind to think critically, even suspiciously, by asking a series of questions that will help you decide how much a web page is to be trusted.

  • This page is organized to combine the two techniques into a process that begins with looking at your search results from a search engine or other source, follows through by investigating the content of page, and extends beyond the page to what others may say about the page or its author(s).

  • Check this website out. It is a great resource for librarians!
