Shawna’s dysfunctional family includes a mother that pursued a lesbian relationship, a possessive father, her mother’s lesbian lover and two children, one who is found to be the biological son of Shawna’s mother and father. Thought provoking for high schools. Shawna wonders who she is, the perfect Shawna doing what is expected, the pathetic Shawna who avoids confrontation, or the evil Shawna whose words can injure. Shawna’s viewpoint of a person who is emotionally, but not sexually attached to lesbians make this book unique. Shawna’s mother left for a lesbian relationship with Fran when Shawna was seven. Her father is a controlling, possessive man who will never forgive her mother even when she dies. Dad sets out to ruin Fran and starts legal proceedings to take the young brother, who is actually his and his ex-wife’s biological child. Shawna’s best friend since childhood reveals she is a lesbian. Does Shawna reject her old friend and her newfound brothers, or does she just ignore them? Her hurtful words about homosexuality come back to haunt her as she becomes more comfortable with their alternative lifestyle. When the biological brother comes to live with Shawna, only Shawna realizes the boy is depressed enough to be suicidal. As Shawna builds a secret relationship with Fran and boys, Fran’s older son becomes romantically involved with Shawna including a one-night-stand sexual relationship that almost seems gratuitous as she knows she will never see him again. Too many issues: Alzheimer's, career choices, homosexuality, and religion, cloud the smooth flow of the plot . However there is much to think about for grades 9-12. LMN

Brent Jeffs, member of a fundamentalist Mormon sect, tells about life in a polygamist community and the sexual abuse from leader Warren Jeffs. Brent heartbreakingly documents the life of boys who are culled to lessen the number of males. For grades 10 and older. Brent Jeffs knew something was wrong when he was five years old and he was sexually abused by Warren Jeffs, leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS). Life inside a polygamist community is well documented with all the jealousy between wives, lack of money to feed the 15 people in Brent’s household, and the strict religious guidelines followed in the community. The biblical background and Mormon beliefs adopted by this sect are explained along with the feelings that members had in following the dictates of Warren Jeffs. As the dictates grew more strict - what TV shows were acceptable, what clothing had to be worn, the contact allowed between sexes outside of marriage, and the beliefs that Gentiles were evil - the lives of members became almost robotic. Polygamy depends upon having fewer males than females as each male strives for at least three wives. Therefore, two of Brent’s older brothers are rejected for various sins and tossed out of the community. As Brent’s family succumbs to infighting between wives, Brent too leaves the community. All three brothers descend into drug and alcohol addiction with the older two brothers committing suicide. Brent struggles with assimilation into city life as do all the “Lost Boys” who are cast out of the FLDS. Brent’s childhood memories come to haunt him and he along with other “Lost Boys” file a lawsuit against Warren Jeffs for sexual abuse that leads to Warren’s imprisonment. Strong, realistic depiction of drug use, sexual abuse and occasional language limit this book to upper high school and adults who are curious about the FLDS. LMN

11-year-old Flavia deLuce uses her passion for chemistry and knowledge of poisons to catch a murderer and clear her father’s name. Winner of the Debut Dagger Award from Canada’s Crime Writers’ Association, this delightful and irreverent mystery features a precocious 11-year-old sleuth. Set in the period following World War II, Flavia is the youngest of three sisters. She has a passion for chemistry, inherited from her adventurous late mother, and a special interest in poisons. When a dead bird with a stamp impaled on its beak, and later a dead man, shows up in her garden, Flavia sets out to solve this mystery, and clear her father’s name.

This delightful novel will probably appeal more to adults than teens, as Flavia employs an extraordinary vocabulary, as well as exceptional deductive skills. However, there is nothing in this novel that will make this unsuitable for middle and high school readers. And there is much to love about this 11-year-old Sherlock Holmes, and her powers of deduction, that include researching old newspapers in her town library. A period piece that is out and out fun to read, exciting and clever, with a gripping encounter with the killer, in the library outbuilding, that will leave readers breathless. Only the British setting, the literary illusions and vocabulary limit the universal appeal and keep this novel from Books of Note. PN

Beryl takes her under her protection and Lucinda’s life brightens until evil rears its ugly head once again.
This engaging fantasy is not a simple retelling of a fairy tale but a sprightly written and exciting adventure. It offers both magical and suspenseful action in a well-paced plot and with engaging characters. The story is rich and interesting, the locations are beautifully rendered, and the characters are very three-dimensional. They come from different places in society and have different points of view but seamlessly join together to help each other. A ship’s boy with a magical talent, a feisty and reluctant bride, traitors and friends all converge on the gigantic ship Chathrand. What begins as a diplomatic mission ends in a conflict between empires, as well as the forces of good and evil. First in a trilogy of sword and sorcery fantasy novels by Reddick, this beginning leaves the reader salivating for more. A fully-realized fantasy world, conflict between adjacent empires, intrigue, a little hint of romance, traitors, tiny warriors, sentient animals, and magic all contribute to make this debut an absolute page-turner.

Set in a maritime world, aboard the city-sized ship, Chathrand, this novel begins with Pavel, son of a traitor to the empire, a ship’s boy, set to sail aboard the mighty ship. Pavel hides a magical ability which reveals itself in ensuing chapters. Reddick then proceeds to people the ship with Thasha, the bride set to unite the empires, Fedthrup, a talking rat, the devious captain, tiny Ixchel warriors, and passengers who are more than they appear.

The Red Wolf of the title is an artifact, which, when recovered holds the Nilstone, a magical talisman of untold power. Deceit and intrigue, violence and friendship, and many layers of character make this novel reminiscent of George R. R. Martin, Anthony Durham and Philip Pullman. The only downside is that the ending leaves the readers up in the air. One of best fantasy novels of the year. PN

Vacationing at an exclusive New Hampshire resort gives friends and family an opportunity to say their goodbyes to Helen, who has been diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer. A beautifully written and compelling novel of love and loss, the story begins with Helen collapsing in the kitchen after her morning run. Only her husband, Elliott, has been told by the doctors that she only has nine months to live. Keeping the secret from her and teenage Abby, Elliott plans a vacation at an exclusive resort to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary. While the story revolves around Helen, with third person narratives, Elliot and Abby, as well as their friends, deal with her decline.

Elliott is beautifully portrayed as the solicitous husband, who drinks to deal with his impending grief. Abby grows from a self-absorbed teen to grieving but competent young woman. The story glows with love and loss, and all the characters are believably portrayed.

A mild sexual encounter, drug and alcohol use make this a novel for older teens, and the subject matter seems more appropriate for adult readers. PN

The family of a boy, beaten into a coma, must decide how to respond when the perpetrator returns from his jail term. Sides are chosen by neighbors. In a gripping read, teens must decide whether to seek revenge or support the reformed perpetrator. Another Orca Soundings hit by Norah McClintock. A boy, Eden, is beaten savagely with a crowbar for coming to the aid of a pregnant teenage girl who is being taunted and hit by the baby’s teenage father, Jojo. Eden’s brother, Ardell, spends two years brooding about the disintegration of his family, his comatose brother, and what he will do when Jojo returns from his two year prison sentence. Jojo is released from prison and quietly returns to the old neighborhood. The neighborhood is a study in contrasts. A neighboring teen narrates the tension-filled story relating the hostility of Ardell’s family toward Jojo, the reappearance of the girl along with her son and her desire to renew the relationship with Jojo against her father’s wishes. What not many people see is the loving manner in which Jojo takes care of his mother who has cancer. Revenge is at the heart of this social problem novel. The neighborhood is forced to take sides on the issue of whether Jojo has paid his debt to society or whether he should be harassed and shunned by the neighbors. Issues presented here are a vivid reminder of how families affected by violence. whether the perpetrator of violence or the recipient of violence, are left to deal with the fallout long after the event occurred. McClintock writes in simple prose alternating passion with tenderness. This book is a surefire hi/lo reader that will appeal to all middle and high school students whether from the inner-city or the suburbs. Highly recommended. LMN

World Writers (Morgan)##7

The mercurial life of Mary Shelley including her childhood, her progressive marriage for the age, and her literary companions form a well-rounded picture of her as a person, as a writer, and as a family member. Strongly recommended for grades 6-12. Mary Shelley was best known for writing Frankenstein. The setting for the novel as well as the genesis of the idea behind the plot are revealed within the framework of her entire life. She went beyond the common story and plot related to ghosts and superhuman figures to create a novel that questioned man’s advances in science and what it is to be human. Her literary parents, her marriage to poet, Percy Shelley and her close friendship with Byron all seem to point to a person of brilliance. However, her life was tortured by a distant relationship with her father, the birth and death of three of her children, and her inability to really make close female friendships. She suffered bouts of writers block as well as depression throughout her life and its turbulent personal relationships. While respected by some, she was reviled by many as she ignored common mores of the times and spoke her mind on political and social issues. Illustrated with paintings and photos of places and people involved in her life, this book is a visual delight. A time line, index, further reading and source notes make this an excellent place to begin to understand the mind and times of Shelley. Strongly recommended for grades 6-12. An error appears on page 142, second paragraph -- the word her is spelled “he r”. LMN Shelley, Mary

Discusses the types of depression, causes and treatment. Colorful photographs and sidebar information make this a great choice for reports or browsing. The complexity of depression is stressed as is the need to seek medical attention. Grades 6+. The complex mental disorder of depression and its close mood relatives: bipolar, anxiety and borderline personality disorder as well as alcohol and drug abuse are discussed. At the heart of the book is the need to get medical treatment whether by a physician (for physical causes of depression) or counselors and psychiatrists (for the brain malfunctions related to responses to events and brain chemistry). The symptoms of depression, the causes, and treatment are all presented with caution as the complexity of depression does not allow easy generalizations. Because the cause of depression can have so many variables as does the manifestation of depression, no quick answers are possible. However students will begin to understand that with proper medical treatment depression does not have to be devastating. Knowing what is normal such as having a “case of the blues” because of a life event or lack of sleep, and realizing when that “case of the blues” is becoming a pervasive part of one’s life gives students a self-assessment tool to determine if they need to seek outside counseling. The colorful photographs of young people in emotional turmoil as well as sidebars and quotations make this book attractive for report writing or for browsing. Symptoms, causes, and treatment are all covered. Strongly recommended for grades 6-12. LMN

Heath’s father suffers with alcoholism and literary rejection. To make matters worse he is suspended from school at the same time that his estranged grandfather dies. The resulting story is both heart warming and heart rendering. Heath Wellington III is between a rock and a hard place when he gets suspended from school for supposedly cheating. His father (called Junior) has suffered repeatedly from alcoholism and literary rejection since his wife left him. It is definitely not a happy family situation. His father has been estranged from his father for years because of stubbornness and pride. This presents a conflict when the grandfather dies and Heath and his father must return to the family home to settle the estate.
The grandfather (Senior) was an unusual person. He made lots of money in his lifetime, but he decided that helping others was more important than making money. When he sold his business he turned the family home into the Sleeping Inn and collected people who needed to make something of themselves. In order for Junior to inherit his father’s estate, he would have to move into the inn and run it successfully for three months keeping the residents happy and content with his management. It is a story of conflict, humor, morals to be learn, and life-changing events for Heath.
This is a well written book in which the characters are well developed. It is easy for the readers to picture: Mustang Sally who is a over muscled, over tattoo grease monkey who writes children’s books, Winstead who is a wise Jamaican and former preacher and jailbird, Mrs. Farrell who is a elderly woman giving away her late husband’s ill earned fortune to needy people, and Carter who is a TV news junkie and Harvard graduate. The interactions between residents and Heath and his father allow the reader to connect with the characters and become involved with their everyday life. It is a timeless heartwarming story that is full of life’s lessons often overlooked in today’s fast paced world. MD,LM,HW

This how to book by award winning designer, Gary Spencer Millidge explains the need to know techniques, rules , and tips for designing your own comic book. Gary S. Millidge, award winning creator of Strangehaven comics, guides the reader through the steps necessary for successful attention grabbing comic book design.
The forward by Dave Gibbons tells the reader that the comic book medium deals with larger than life characters and scenes. At the same time it is a medium constrained by space. It is this restriction of space that makes it necessary for comics to grab attention quickly and become miniature masterpieces with strong storylines or narratives. It is the simplicity of line and informality found in the comics that allows readers to connect with comics. In the introduction the author defines design to be all about communication and presentation to express messages. He also states that “comics are a unique synthesis of words and pictures.....Comics are more than the sum of their parts; they’re not just a sequence of images over a number of consecutive pages.”
The most important factor about this book is the beautifully formatted pages that present the informative text accompanied by colored graphics that highlight comics, in-depth information, and how to tips. Also usability in added with the addition of an index, picture credits, and acknowledgments.

Each chapter is formatted to include: an introduction, how to tips and informative tips accompanied with detailed annotated comic examples. At the end of each chapter there is a designer highlighted with examples of his/her work. The chapters are: Creating story line concepts and original designs, Designing characters and creating background locations, Drawing in pencil and ink or digitally, Page layout and grid structure, Lettering word balloons and color, Covers and publication design.
Although this is a paperback, it is jammed packed with pertinent information and how to dos for the comic book collectors. You might also say it is worth it’s weight in gold to anyone interested in comic books. LM

An in-depth accounting of the author of the recently published Twilight Saga. Stephenie Meyer has proved to be a fresh breath to young readers. Readers will find answers to their questions between the covers of this book. Meyer’s life before Twilight was that of an English teacher and SuperMom with two small boys. It was just ordinary in most respects. As a child she always liked to watch Saturday morning cartoons where she favored the X-men. She was always an avid storyteller. Many times she would find herself telling herself stories that she had made up for one reason or another.
Then one night she had a dream in which she dreamed of this scene where an average teenage girl was walking in a meadow with a butterscotch eyed vampire. Upon wakening she went to her computer and wrote out the story before her family awoke. Thus began the Twilight Saga.
Stephenie’s dramatic rise to successful writer will full the hearts of many new authors and give them hope. International fame earned so rapidly is certainly something that constantly awes Stephanie.

The inclusion of chronology, chapter notes, several lists, where to obtain more information and a glossary/index make this a useful research tool. The inclusion of web sites for youngsters is also important in school classrooms today.
The flow and balance of both the text and full color visuals are integrated to present a very stimulating book for both young and reluctant readers. LM

Great Science Fair Ideas (Enslow)

This is almost a handbook for teachers and for students who are serious about science projects, covering lots of how-to’s as well as highlighting some brilliant student work from all over the world. The book begins with some inspiring stories of student scientific achievement. In some cases the stories left the reader wanting more information about an individual project, but then the focus came back to ways in which the reader can make his/her work really stand out as well.
From explanations of the scientific method to keeping a good notebook to marketing one’s project, this was a very thorough examination of the subject.

Suddenly it’s exciting to look for other thrills, making him feel closer to his dead grandpa Hank who believed in living in the moment.
Not much plot or character development--Dad surprises him by supporting Sean’s decision to identify the gunmen to police--but enough to grab a reluctant reader. The moral that we all have choices in life isn’t too heavy, either. SG
