Tom Brady played at University of Michigan where he did not always get the opportunity to show his talent as quarterback, but then moved to the Patriots where he displaced the powerful Drew Bledsoe all-pro to become a world class quarterback.
This series ties together sports and community service, a wonderful blend for young readers today. Barry Wilner is a solid writer who writes a book that would serve both elementary school and middle school readers. His sentence style is characterized by exciting, upbeat descriptive text that shows Tom Brady in his glory. An over-the-top, stellar career has too many highlights to mention here, but suffice it to say that he led the New England Patriots to 3 Super Bowl championships in 4 tries. He has been a Super Bowl MVP, a league MVP and title-holder to the perfect season in 2007. Along with Peyton Manning, he is a top quarterback in the U. S. As if his football career isn’t enough, he shines in the area of community service as well! He donates his time, effort and money to a program entitled “One Laptop Per Child” which gives needy children in Uganda a chance to learn about the world, Best Buddies which raises money for mentally and physically challenged people, the World Wildlife Fund which promotes the earth and Goodwill in its service to homeless on Thanksgiving Day. Young readers are treated to outstanding support photographs which show Brady with two hats, as player and contributor to society. They are also treated to quality writing, well-organized information and authentic quotations about Brady’s successes. Please note that sources for each quotations are mentioned in the text, but no listing of chapter quotations exists. The book ends with a chart of career statistics, an address for eager young fans to contact Tom Brady, a glossary of vocabulary, a list of books and Internet sites to consult and an index. This series focuses on the careers of Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Kevin Garnett, Peyton Manning, LeBron James, David Wright, & others. The first 5 chapters which deal with the star’s contribution on the playing field are followed by a chapter on the charities of focus of each star. One goal of all librarians is to promote reading among younger audiences, and this book will accomplish that goal. It is a good choice for the elementary, middle school and public library. Whitley, David. Children of the Lost (Agora Trilogy)
Roaring Brook Press (see macmillan children's pub) 2011 357p 16.99

Banished from Agora, where all transactions are bartered, Mark and Lily discover the seemingly idyllic land of Giseth. Should the two outcasts abandon their quest for the children of the lost to settle in Giseth? Second in the Agora Trilogy, the back story is easy to piece together; readers need not have read, “The Midnight Charter,” in order to enjoy “Children of the Lost.”
Lily and Mark are exiled to the forested wilderness that surrounds the City-State of Agora. Raised in a competitive urban environment, where every transaction is bartered, the two are ill prepared to survive in the untamed environment. But Lily, whose parents had previously been banished to the forest, looks upon her exile as a quest to locate her parents. Mark reluctantly agrees to help her search -- though he feels betrayed that she has included him on this adventure without his consent, just as he was finally becoming acquainted with his own father.
The Nightmare inhabits the dark woods and threads itself into dreams, with violent results. Even when Lily and Mark are brought to Aeccer, a village in the land of Giseth, where all are equal and all resources are shared, where the residents appear happy and selfless, the Nightmare lurks beneath the surface. Lily embraces the “perfect” society that mirrors the aspirations and dreams that led her to create the Almshouse in Agora. Mark is skeptical and searches for flaws in the new society.
In a fantasy exploring extreme consumerism (Agora) versus communism/socialism (Giseth) it is not surprising that conflict, secrets, and betrayals abound. The plot moves forward at a smoothly page-turning pace. The ending, open to accommodate the forthcoming final volume, leaves our protagonists separated with their quest unfulfilled. Readers will look forward to revisiting these well-rounded characters in the next installment.
Those who enjoyed Pullman’s “His Dark Materials, “ or Collins’ Mockingjay series, will enjoy David Whitley’s Agora Trilogy.

Dolly and Jack are the best of friends. They did everything together until they decide to do a picture of each other and took a good look at how they portrayed each other. They became angry and had a terrible fight. Now they are lonely and missing each other. How can they become friends again?
Dolly the pig and Jack the rabbit are the best of friends. They do everything together. They play together, they laugh together, they listen to music together, they giggle together and they sing together. Then one Jack comes by wearing a beret looking like an artist and he asked Dolly if he could paint her. Dolly thinks it is a grand idea and she gets her paints and does a picture of Jack. When they were done they looked at each other pictures. Dolly complained that Jack made her look like a lumpy pumpkin and Jack complained that Dolly made his ears look like slimy slugs. Dolly grabbed her things and angrily walked out and Jack told her to never come back. They both sulked at home at how angry they were but gradually they become sad and lonely and are missing each other and the way they share laughter, fun and games. They must find a way to become friends but how can they make up and be friends again?
A funny cute story full of delightful images of two cute characters. Their delight in each other is fun to watch and when the fight breaks out you can feel how much they miss each others company until they can take it no more and find a way to mend their friendship.
Kids will truly enjoy this picture book.

When Regina makes a wish, little did she know it would be granted. Her alternate life is a dream come true but not base on a true reality since she knows the truth. Can she live knowing this life she now has is based on lies? Regina or Gina as she is known by her friends is the leader of her band The Caverns. They are not getting many gigs and the group feels that maybe they should incorporate more modern music instead of always playing Beatles music. The last gig was the last straw for band members Lorna and Danny the drummer. In fact, they were offered a spot on another band and are ready to move on. That is when Gina makes her wish and it is granted.
She wakes up to find that she is at the top of the music list and her songs are the greatest and have won a few awards. She soon discovers that her songs are actually Beatles songs. However, no one seems to know who the Beatles are and in her alternate world the Beatles do not exist and their songs are her songs. Then she discovers that she has already had a relationship with Julian, the boy she really likes but she does not remember it, At All!!!! In this world she has already moved on to some other boy who seems to be nice but he is not Julian. Somehow it does not seem fair that she would have missed having a relationship with Julian. On the other hand, she sort of likes this world where she can actually have a relationship with her mother and her father.
To Gina’s surprise she discovers that just as she knows this is not her world, there are others just like her. She has a choice; she can accept this world of fame or go back and live her life as a normal teenager. Hard choices!!!
A story that was written with Miley Cyrus in mind. I can just picture her and her father in the role of father and daughter dealing with mother and boyfriend issues. The story is very interesting but the conflict not very well defined. There really is no right or wrong, there are only choices of fame or anonymity.

Through the use of series of experiments, readers learn about how battery driven, DC motors work. Upper elementary and middle school readers who love to find out how things work will love this book on basic, electric motors. Following a brief introduction about motors and DC battery power vs. AC outlet power, a series of brief experiments are used to introduce the reader to motors. Every experiment begins with a “Things you will need” list and is followed by a stepwise of how to conduct the experiment and possible results. Every experiment also emphasizes the importance of safety and recommends having a parent or teacher on-hand. Side bars with related topics are scattered throughout the books as well; some topics include: “disposing of batteries” and “idea for science fair project.” Photos throughout the book illustrate many of the experiments.
The book concludes with resources for locating experiment components, a glossary, and print and web bibliographies. This series is complete in 4 titles. Given that the other titles are comparable, this series will help students who really enjoy hands-on learning, find an outlet for their interests. A wonderful resource for elementary and middle school science fair projects. Highly recommended for elementary school, middle school and public libraries. Fisher, Lynn

This is a how-to book about creating science experiments that make use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power. There is a misleading sentence right on page 7, in the introduction: “It takes many centuries, however, to replenish the oil, coal, and gas that we use for most of our energy today.” In fact, these resources would take about 90 million years to replenish, so “many centuries” is very quite an understatement and misleading.
However, this book is well laid-out, attractive, and fairly clear in conveying the information it seeks to convey. It takes students through science experiments step-by-step, with plenty of explanation about how things work.
Some of the web pages that are cited in the “for further research” section are a bit “young” for the intended age-group: for example, a website that focuses on Tinker Bell. Each book in the series covers a particular type of scientific experiment ... for example, robot experiments, radio-controlled car experiments, etc. This is recommended for collections that serve students involved in science fairs and other kinds of scientific experimentation. “Foxy DuBois is delighted when Egg rolls up to her door, and she invites him in to enjoy dinner, games, and a place to sleep, even as she makes plans for a special breakfast.” Set in a movie setting background, elementary students meet Vivien Vixen as Foxy DuBois and her special dinner guest Edward L’Oeuf as Egg. Egg, a little pink-spotted egg, arrived at Foxy’s for dinner, he didn’t recognize the danger that lurked since his dinner companion was trying to fatten him up so that she could eat him for breakfast. After Foxy fed him a massive meal including a lot of fattening desserts, she followed dinner with fun games such as hide-and-seek and musical chairs. At the end of their fun night, Foxy invited Egg to spend the night so that he could stay for Foxy’s breakfast. That night, Foxy dreamed of all types of eggs to eat, but instead of eating Egg for breakfast, she was surprised that Egg woke up enormous, but soon started to crack and hatch. What Foxy saw instead was an enormous green looking animal that appears to be some sort of alligator who in turn wanted to feast on her.
Includes great color illustrations and easy-to-read text for young readers. Would make a great addition to an elementary library collection.

A collection of delightful and very wise tales. Nasrudin Hoja has a way of confronting everyday problems in a most unique way that will get you laughing and enjoying his wisdom. Excellent for read aloud. Nasrudin Hoja from Turkey lived a long time ago but his wisdom is still remembered because he always answered with good humor while teaching a lesson. His stories are funny, full of irony, and wisdom. One day Hoja lost his donkey and as his neighbors sympathies with him he answered that in his observation he considered himself a lucky man. If he had been riding the donkey then he would have been lost too!
Hoja never misses an opportunity to teach a lesson. I especially like the story of the Coat. In this story Hoja is invited to a feast but before the evening feast Hoja decides to work in his vineyard and is surprised how long it took him to finish the work. On his way home he saw his friends already on their way to the party so he decided to go to the party without bathing or changing his clothes. However, when he got there the smell coming off of him was offensive and he was basically ignored by the other guest, the owners and the servants. He went home and cleaned up and changed his clothes. The differences were quite impressive and his answer to this behavior was evident as he was heard telling his coat to eat and drink. When he was asked why he was wasting good food and drink on his coat his answer was “ When I came in my old coat, you offered me no hospitality at all, and now I wear this fine coat and you seat me at your table as an honored guest. So it must be the coat you invited to the feast!!”

This is a detailed biography of the actress Scarlett Johansson, complete with discussion of her movies, a chronology and a filmography. The book is well organized and thorough, with discussion of each of her movies and the critics’ responses to them. Concepts are explained in text ... for example, there is an explanation of what the Oscars are, for any student who hasn’t already figured it out! But the style is pleasing, and the tone very respectful. There is a section on the kinds of charity work that Ms. Johansson has engaged in, such as her work with Oxfam and in raising money for needy families. The filmography at the end is helpful, and there are many footnotes. The list of books for further reading includes a book on breaking into the field of acting and a book on Oxfam, as well as books on the actress herself. Others in the series include books on Lance Armstrong, Tina Fey and Steven Spielberg. This book is recommended for students in grades five and up. Kennedy, Carol

A biography of the very successful comedian, screen writer and actor Tina Fey. From her years as a somewhat ‘mean girl’ in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, to her multitude of successes as a comedy writer, this mid-level biography documents Tina Fey’s life to date. Written for elementary and middle school students, the author often takes the time to clarify the many television and recent history references that mark the milestones of Ms. Fey’s timeline. For example, what the TV shows “The Honeymooners” and “The Flintstones” were, and how “The Flintstones” was in fact a cartoon version of “The Honeymooners.” Along with the brief history of 60’s television, readers also get a behind the scenes look at what it takes to produce a television show, live, such as “Saturday Night Live.”
This book is well written and has many photographs appropriately placed within the book.
This series of biographies is complete in 16 titles. If they are all comparable, this is a well written, illustrated and documented series that upper elementary and middle school students will enjoy reading.

Highly recommended for addition to any elementary school, middle school or public library collection. Fisher, Lynn

“ An illustrated overview of Benjamin Franklin's inventions, wisdom, and accomplishments.” Written for upper elementary students, this entertaining title arranged alphabetically will be a welcome addition to an elementary school library’s collection. Each double-page spread provides many details about our Founding Father, beginning with the letter A for almanac and ending with the letter Z for zeal. Unlike some other A to Z books out on the market, the author includes several key words for each letter of the alphabet. Topics include information on his personal history and family, public service, inventions, places, accomplishments, people, characteristics, beliefs, writings, and upbringing.
Illustrator, John O’Brien, creates each page in a beautiful and colorful way using watercolor and ink. Through the illustrations and drawings, students will gain a better understanding of what times appeared like during Franklin’s time and to show how Franklin lived in our world. At a time when some publishers are trimming their costs of producing a quality book, this title will not disappoint librarians who seek a high quality book that will survive for many years of circulation.
Would make an excellent addition to an elementary collection for both casual reading and for biography projects. Forba-Mayer, Charleen

Irena Sendler was a Polish social worker who personally saved more than 400 Jewish children from extermination at the hands of the Nazis. This inspiring story of bravery and compassion in a time of dreadful fear is presented in an appropriate manner for its intended age group. The oil paintings greatly enhance the subject. The biography ends with an afterword about Sendler’s life after the war, a bibliography of resources, source notes, and an index.
Irena Sendler was a Polish social worker who personally saved more than 400 Jewish children from extermination at the hands of the Nazis. She smuggled them out of the Warsaw Ghetto in toolboxes, lunch boxes, suitcases, and through the sewers and provided them with false papers and safe havens for the remainder of the war. She kept a record of their trues identities in two jars that she buried in a Warsaw courtyard. A member of, and aided by, the resistance organization Zegota, she was caught by the Gestapo and tortured but never revealed the locations of her children. Sentenced to death, she was saved at the last minute and survived to continue her work.
All told, more than 2,500 children were rescued by Sendler and her organization. In 1965, Sendler was recognized by Yad Vashem as one of the “Righteous among the Nations.”

“As the judging of his class's science fair approaches, Otis has trouble even thinking of an idea but once he has built a bird feeder he is determined to make some good observations, no matter how long it takes.” Beautifully illustrated in gouache-and pencil, elementary students will be able to relate to Otis and his classmates as they begin to choose interesting projects for their science fair. While nearly everybody picks their science fair projects easily, Otis needs a little assistance to find the right project for him. With the help of his teacher, Mr. Zee, Otis settles on making a bird feeder for his project out of an empty milk carton. After Otis constructs, paints, and hangs the feeder outside of his classroom window, he watches for birds. Otis knows that part of a great science fair project includes observations. But since he didn’t observe any birds on his feeder, he begins to wonder if he will ever see any. When the science fair judges arrive at his classroom, they award him the “Stick-With-It-Prize.” Otis’s determination and persistence paid off when he and his classmates observe a variety of birds at his feeder.
The author uses appealing, easy-to-read text and beautiful graphics. Instead of an index, which is usually not found in easy chapter books anyway, the author includes a list of all student projects giving the pages where they appear in the story. The title would be great for introducing students to science fair projects and for demonstrating that both persistence and determination are key elements to one’s learning.

Elliott and Paisley are caught up in politics, murder and illegal activities. Victorian in style with references to classical literature, this adventure/mystery novel involving Mr. Strange has a dash of humor to vary the mood. For Pullman fans in grades 7-12. A rousing start to the second book in The Wellborn Conspiracy series. Elliott is in the process of being murdered by thugs of Mr. Strange, the villain from the first book in The Wellborn Conspiracy series. Elliott narrowly escapes death on his train ride to Paisley’s home only to find that a lazy summer will become anything but relaxing. It seems the evil Mr. Strange, who was thought to be contained, is now on the loose again. Full of humor and references to classical literature, this Victorian tale will appeal to action/adventure lovers as well as those who like a bit of fantasy thrown in. Could one of the girls be a werewolf who saved Elliott from a second murder attempt? What is the submarine device and how is it involved in the political intrigue? And what about the captured goods (lemons) onboard the smuggler’s ship that is commandeered to take the young people in search of a villain? Will the apparition of Ellen save them when their lifeboat capsizes? And will true love conquer all? Fun reading that will delight fans of Phillip Pullman and those who enjoyed the first in the Wellborn Conspiracy series. No knowledge of the first book is needed to appreciate this sequel. Grades 7-12.
Recommended where Victorian themed novels are appreciated. This adventure/fantasy will appeal to boys and girls who enjoy a little political intrigue mixed up in a murder mystery. McNicol, Lois

Rights of women are highlighted in this small biography of a young cowgirl, Agnes Morley, who attends Stanford, plays in the first women’s college basketball game and proves that women can be feminine yet tough! There is a certain “je ne sais quoi” about this book that makes it a good choice for an elementary school library. Yes, there are gaps of information which might be too much for a younger reader to handle. For example, what is it about basketball that inspires young Agnes to choose the sport upon her arrival to Stanford? In addition, one will ask about the inspiration behind Smith’s Senda Berenson and her adaptation of men’s ball to female rules. If the reader can ignore such gaps as these, the book has a good message and outstanding artistry. The faces literally shine with rich colors and rich expressions as the Stanford team, attired in bloomers and tights, achieves victory over Berkeley back in 1896. Agnes tells her story in first person, bringing the first game alive to the audience, and when the game ends with a score of 2-1, the reader has been treated to firsthand details of a game that changed the history of college basketball.
One sees this book as a possible series about female firsts, and a valid set for a library to use when celebrating women’s rights. Ending with a page of biographical information about Morley and a timeline which shows the highlights of the development of women’s basketball, the book also offers 6 resources for readers to consult to learn more. If extensive biographical details are the goal of the student or classroom teacher, the book does not meet that goal. This book is a good choice for an elementary school library as well as a public library. The topic of women’s rights is universal, and this book offers a unique perspective on the origins of contemporary women’s basketball. Squaresky, Martha

Hokey Pokey becomes Croaky Pokey when frogs, toads, an egret and an alligator all try to catch a pesky fly for dinner. Song lyrics are aptly illustrated and creatively depicted in this pictorial version of the famous song. As children sing the Hokey Pokey song, instrument-playing frogs rock in the bog. Children will delight in singing along and watching as one of the frogs sticks out his very long tongue while trying to snatch a fly from the sky. The frog fails, and a hungry toad next tries to catch that fly. All kinds of water creatures join in as one frog does the Croaky Pokey, and all meet with failure. Frustration on the alligator’s face is sure to please youngsters, and as the story moves to the “backside”, we see alligator, frog, turtle, egret swishing their backsides to the tune. “Snap!” Every mouth in the bog snaps shut, missing that pesky fly! The final pages of this book show all of the frogs snapping frantically for the illusive fly, and all become entangled in their tongues as a fish jumps forward to catch his dinner!
The pictures are so good that text is not needed! One can envision a resourceful teacher of literacy using this book to teach sight vocabulary and easy song words. Another idea might be to play the Hokey Pokey version and compare it to the Croaky Pokey! Books that entertain young readers abound, so what will make someone buy this one? The facial expressions of the animals combine with the clever way that the author teaches body parts and left from right with a timeless classic to make this book a good choice for the early learner.
This book is a good choice for nursery and elementary schools. The pairing of illustrations and music is both entertaining and educational as it has been proven that music helps children to remember what they are learning. Squaresky, Martha

Eric Kimmel presents the whole “Megillah” in this vivid description of the Jewish holiday of Purim, Festival of Lots. The Biblical Book of Esther goes back to the ancient court of Ahasuerus, King of Persia who rids himself of his disobedient wife Vashti, and then vows to marry the most beautiful girl in his kingdom. His choice falls upon the Jewish Esther, niece of Mordecai. She keeps her religion a secret until Mordecai discovers that the king’s evil advisor Haman is planning to destroy the entire Jewish population of Persia. Mordecai begs Esther to speak with the king to save their people and it is because of her courage “that evil was brought to justice and many lives were saved.”
The book is written in simple and lyrical language that thoroughly engages the reader. Kimmel presents his story in simple and direct words. His characters, both good and bad, are fully realized; they are brought to life and have distinct personalities. The full-page paintings are beautiful and compliment the story perfectly.
Highly recommended for elementary level libraries that need information on religious holidays. Ogintz, Susan

Through photos, first hand accounts, biographies and historical information, this volume presents an accurate and useful overview of the “War to end all wars.” Beginning with the sinking of the Lusitania, the pivotal event that brought the US into World War I, this volume then presents a chronological overview of the war. The narrative portion of the text is interspersed with first hand accounts, primary source material, biographical profiles, and vintage photos, as well as artists’ renditions of trench warfare, decisive battles, etc.
The layout and information provided is accurate, and presented in such a manner that even reluctant readers will be able to use this source for research. Many of the informational segments present information that will spur readers to research the topic in more depth. The Armenian Genocide, for example, is mentioned, with photos, and briefly explained. Readers will also want to know about the three cousins at war with each other, all grandsons of Queen Victoria - Kaiser Wilhelm II, Czar Nicholas II and King George V. The heroism of Alvin York will also entice readers to explore further.
Supplemental materials include a chronology, glossary, chapter notes, bibliographical references and an index. All in all, a very well-written and useful research tool. This title is part of the United States at War series. There are 6 books in the series at this time. The theme of the book is to provide not only coverage of major personalities and battles, but civilian and military life during the major wars in US history.
A useful addition to historical and warfare collections in middle schools. The addition of primary source materials will also make this a useful research tool for high school collections. Naismith, Pat

Outstanding imagery shows tension and fear as Corlie and her family are forced into an internment camp during the Boer War in South Africa. Unwanted by her mother, Corlie struggles until finding comfort from others including a British soldier. Gr 7+.
There is a powerhouse punch packed in this slim volume about the Boer War in South Africa. Corlie feels she is just a burden to her mother who dotes on younger siblings. She finds some solace with the African family who helps with the family farm. As the Boer War battles come closer to her farm, Corlie’s family rushes to join others who are fleeing to safer territory. On their journey, Corlie observes a lone British soldier who Corlie had seen once before at her farm. He provides her with fresh meat to take back to the Boer encampment. Shortly thereafter, the British surround and capture the small group of Boers, taking men prisoner and sending women and children to internment camps. The harsh conditions at the camp are vivid with starvation, disease, and death daily taking its toll emotionally and physically. With the death of Corlie’s brother, her mother forces Corlie out of the family. Corlie goes to the British barracks asking for the British soldier she has seen twice before. After family secrets are finally discovered, Corlie feels a strong attraction to this young British soldier who actually values her. Heart-wrenching and heartwarming, this book is outstanding historical fiction about race relations, religious beliefs and nationalism amidst a war that is little known to American readers.
For grades 7 and up - can also be enjoyed by adults. Strongly recommended where the Boer War is studied. Powerful imagery shows the tension and fear as people are rounded up and forced into an internment camp. McNicol,Lois

Jocelyn, Marthe. Scribbling Women.
Jocelyn, Marthe. Scribbling Women.
Tundra Books 2011 208p 19.95
978-0-88776-952-8 VG
Jocelyn highlights eleven inspiring women, from various cultures and time periods, who had diverse reasons for writing. Despite various challenges, their writing has left a rich legacy about their lives. Some are famous, such as the journalist, Nellie Bly, others less well-known. Their lives were often brave; one survived a brutal existence in the Arctic during a scientific expedition gone wrong, another lived a cosseted life in Imperial Japan, and yet another was a Vietnamese doctor who perished while writing amidst American bombing in the jungles of Vietnam.
Jocelyn establishes that their lives were bold and that their writings offer a fascinating perspective into challenging lives of these extraordinary women. She has researched her subjects well; for example, when describing Mary Kingsley’s adventures in West Africa, she notes how Kingsley disapproved of King Leopold’s colonization and mistreatment of the people of the Belgian Congo. Jocelyn provides illustrations or photographs of the woman and links each chapter cleverly so that the book flows effortlessly from one story to another. Pieces of the women’s writings are interspersed within the chapters about them, so in addition to reading about them, one gets a feel for their writing style and personality. This is would be a very good title that could enlighten high school readers on how, despite various challenges, writing can leave a rich legacy about the writer’s life.

For any child who has stared at the night sky and wondered if there is life out there. Jason goes on an intergalactic trip with Sam from Pleiades in a space vehicle that resembles an old Dodge Dart. Witty with just enough science terms tossed in. Gr. 4-7.
This book will delight anyone who has stared at the night sky and wondered if there is life in other galaxies light years from planet earth. Jason sees something come out of the sky and land near him as he is walking home from school. Out of the vehicle, which has a close resemblance to a 1960 Dodge Dart, steps a very short, slightly bluish man. The humor takes off from there and continues all through the book. The man named Sam from the galaxy Pleiades gains Jason’s confidence. Sam’s return trip requires ingredients to fix his vehicle -- namely ketchup and marshmallows. Wonderful illustrations capture the whimsy. Sam promises to return and take Jason bongo fishing where donut holes serve as bait on a hookless line. Sam and Jason will eat gollywhoggers, an entire meal in one food that includes the taste of dessert.
Children may miss some of the illusions as a crazy therapist employs an enforcer named Oddjob. There are references to Zarathustra, parsecs and the cat is named Sputnik. Sam and his wife become frequent guests of Jason, sleeping in his closet and together they cause all sorts of mayhem, even visiting Area 51. Danger lurks as the crazy therapist tries to kidnap Sam but all is well by the end of the book. Enough fuel to fire up a science-minded reader and enough humor to cause belly laughs. Grades 4-7
Recommended for anyone who has stared up at the night sky and wondered if there was life on other galaxies. Witty and humorous, Jason meets Sam, an alien from Pleiades who drives a 1960 Dodge Dart through the universe. Grades 4-7. McNicol, Lois

Hillenbrand, Will. Spring is Here.

978-0-8234-1602-8 Animal stories VG
Mole must wake bear for springtime and figures out exactly what will work, a scrumptious breakfast in bed. He mixes up a winner which entices bear to eat, but the exhausted mole falls asleep next to his friend at the end. As a read-aloud for a classroom at springtime, or as an early reader for an independent learner, Spring is Here is charming. The topic of the return of spring each year is not new, but with warm, worthy illustrations and endearing animal choices, Hillenbrand tells a story that mirrors Frog and Toad’s “Spring” in quality, yet offers something new in its plot. Mole tries to wake his buddy, a hibernating bear. Bear is reluctant to leave the warmth of his bed. As a result, mole thinks of a way to start spring for bear, by serving him breakfast in bed! It works, but mole has worked so hard preparing the breakfast that he falls asleep next to his buddy, the now inspired bear, ready to confront springtime! The onomatopoeias are wonderful for the young audience, the new terms relating to making breakfast are educational, and the facial expression of bear when he finally awakens is sure to make a connection with readers of all ages! The grainy quality of the illustrations and the muted primary colors for the majority of pictures are warm and inviting.
New parents, early education teachers and elementary teachers will find a use for this book! The story is not new, but the pictures, sounds and characters offer a new look at springtime. Squaresky, Martha

“ When Punxsutawney Phyllis forecasts a blizzard on April Fools' Day--the same day as the Spring Treasure Hunt--the other groundhogs are convinced that Phyllis is pulling a prank. Includes information of the origins of April Fools' Day and how it is celebrated around the world.” Beautifully illustrated, Phyllis the groundhog, known as the “Weather Prophet Extraordinaire” warns everyone that a blizzard is coming for April 1st, the day of the big Spring Treasure Hunt. When everyone, including Uncle Phil thinks Phyllis is playing a practical April Fools joke on them, several family members play pranks on poor Phyllis. Phil Junior sticks his paws in ice to make Phyllis think his claws are freezing from the weather outside and Pete throws confetti into the air to make Phyllis think it is snowing outside. Since no one believed Phyllis, the Spring Treasure Hunt began and the young groundhogs began to uncover clues to the hunt. Much to their surprise, they were hit with a powerful blizzard and Phyllis was able to lead everyone to safety. Uncle Phil now knew that Phyllis was right about her weather prediction and that the rest of the family were the “April fools.”
Beautifully illustrated with earth tone acrylics, students will be able to relate to Phyllis the groundhog in this second installment to Punxsutawney Phyllis.
The author includes information on “April Fools’ Day” for young readers to gain an understanding of this tradition. Would make a great addition to an elementary collection for both casual reading and for introducing students to the traditions of April Fools’ Day. Forba-Mayer,Charleen
