Williams, Marcia.  Les Miserables.  Random/Candlewick Press  2014  unp  $17.99  ISBN 978-0-7636-7476-2  ms  Graphic novel  VG-BN

Marcia Williams does an excellent job of making Victor Hugo’s massive classic accessible to middle-school readers.  This easy-to-read adaptation is guaranteed to hook young readers who are not yet ready to tackle the original.  The number of illustrations, arranged in cartoon format, varies on each page depending on the place in the story.  The adapted narrative is told under the panels while the character’s comments are given in the word bubbles.  The text is spiced with dramatic anecdotes and the tone is true to the story.  The drawings reflect the personalities of the individuals, with the “good” people having sweeter looks than the evildoers.  Each has distinctive features and is readily recognizable throughout the book.   This graphic novel does a very good job of providing an introduction to the story.

Summary: Marcia Williams does an excellent job of making Hugo’s massive classic accessible to middle-school readers.  This easy-to-read adaptation is guaranteed to hook young readers who are not yet ready to tackle the original.

Yolen, JaneCurses Foiled AgainMacmillan/First Second  2013  162p  $15.99  ISBN 978-1-59643-619-0        ms/hs      Graphic novel     VG-BN

Jane Yolen continues the saga of Aliera, the teen-aged girl chosen to be the Defender of Faerie Avery, a magically glamoured troll bonded to Aliera, and her disabled cousin Caroline, in the second book in the series.  Aliera has become a notable fencer, now training for national events, and has been given a mysteriously gifted practice foil by her mother.  This weapon has attracted the interest of a group of trolls who are determined to get it from her.  They attempt to kidnap Aliera and Avery in Grand Central Terminal and steal the foil but after a pitched battle, they do not succeed.  Instead, they kidnap Caroline and take her down below the Terminal to their leader.  Aliera must call on the witch Baba Yaga for help in saving Caroline.  Fast-paced and action-packed, this graphic novel provides readers with a strong female protagonist who is not afraid to take matters into her own hands.  The chapters are designated by fencing terms and the lively prose and well-developed characters, creative plot twists, witty repartee, and drama are attractively set off by the artwork.  Above ground, all is shades of gray, with only Aliera shown in color.  Below, in the surreal world, the backgrounds are darker and more somber, adding to the mysterious feeling. Readers will be impatiently awaiting the next sequel.

Aristophane (translated by Matt Madden). The Zabime Sisters

Aristophane (translated by Matt Madden The Zabime Sisters
First Second (macmillan) 2010 85p 16.99 978-1-59643-638-1
ms/hs Graphic Novel - sisters - French Caribbean islands - Afro Caribbean E-BN

The Zabine sisters live in a lush French Caribbean island and today is the first day of their summer vacation. They do everything together but today all three decide to go on their individual adventure. Of course trouble follows each and everyone of them and now they are worried about how they are going to get out of trouble.
The Zabine sisters always do things together and on their first day of vacation they begin by going to the riverbank to play near the water. The sisters are so unique yet whether they are together or not they can get into so much trouble. Today M╒Rose announces that there is going to be fight and she plans to be there and cheer for the winner. Ella is the dreamer of the group and she scared easily. Sometimes her imagination runs wild. Celine is daring and impatient. She expected things to be done the way she thinks they should be done, whatever that is.
This graphic novel is delightful and full of excitement. The girls are funny and will make you laugh at their antics. Although the graphic novel is in black and white I found that the author captures the feel the tropics. You can almost see the lushness and feel the warm heat emanating from the earth. 978-1-59643-454-7 ms/hs Graphic novel E-BN
In graphic novel format, the author recounts her admission and stay at a mental health facility. Excellent graphics extend the narrative showing viewpoints from friends, family, fellow residents, and doctors. Unsettling yet hopeful. Outstanding! For grades 7-12.
Tracy White recounts her admission and stay at a mental health hospital. Stacy became a party girl using pills to self-medicate while at boarding school and knows she will surely die if she continues her current path. Told in a timeline format, readers meet “Stacy” as a 17 year old boarding school student through the voices of four friends: two longtime friends, a boarding school roommate and a fellow resident of the treatment center. Each friend has her own problems. The pages are divided into distinct “comic frames” however the dialogue bubbles and even the graphics in the frames often extend into another pane. Memories are related in frames that have a gray background and thoughts float at the top of a frame. Excellent graphics, uncluttered in black and white, add intensity to the narrative. The reader slowly comes to realize the trauma Stacy experienced as White reveals the death of her father, her distant mother, an inappropriate encounter with an apartment employee and her own choice of friends. Never quiet truthful, Stacy finally reveals her bulimia. The reader experiences Stacy’s turmoil firsthand as well as receiving information from patient charts, therapy session discussions, and interviews with her four friends. The reader will long remember Stacy and her struggle to become a “happy” person. Strongly recommended for grades 7+ Strongly recommended for grades 7-12. Students struggling with depression and self-abusive actions will recognize themselves in Stacy. Students who know someone who is depressed will gain insight into their friend’s behaviors and state of mind. McNicol,Lois

In this ultimate version of a graphic novel combined with a choose-your-own-adventure, young Jimmy has to make a very dangerous decision: whether to buy chocolate or vanilla ice cream. In this ultimate version of a graphic novel combined with a choose-your-own-adventure, young Jimmy has to make a very dangerous decision: whether to buy chocolate or vanilla ice cream. Either choice will lead him through a series of exciting activities that are bound to end in “DOOM and DISASTER.” Each of the different options lead to a series of tubes that meander in many directions throughout the pages of this book and may result in 3,856 different possibilities. As the readers follow a chosen path, the tubes work outward to tabs on the edges of the pages and from there, perhaps, to another world. Readers can meet up with a mad scientist, save a baby, tinker with different manic devices including a “kill machine,” or even get home safely. Printed on sturdy shiny paper, the clever illustrations are drawn in black ink and overlaid with color. The script appears as a handwritten font and adds greatly to the comic book form. This will be a sure winner for those young readers who are fascinated by adventure choices, graphic novels or even dips into alternative universes. Ogintz, Susan

This graphic novel is the story of the legendary Tall Tale character Pecos Bill. It is said that in the 1920’s, as baby, he fell off a wagon and was raised by wolves. He grew to be a man of legend who could wrestler with wild mares and do all kind of incredible things. This graphic novel is the story of the legendary character Pecos Bill. It is said that in the 1920’s, as baby, he fell off his family’s wagon on the way to the wild west. He was discovered by a she wolf and she adopted him into her family of cubs. He grew to be a man of legend who could grapple with wild mares, ride a wild cat and carry a herd of bulls on his back. As he grew into adulthood he left his pack and took off on his own with such good luck that he was found by his long lost brother, who recognized him. It is said he was the first to use a lasso, he was also the first to invent a branding iron. He met his match when he met Sue.
An entertaining graphic novel on a very colorful legendary tall tale cowboy of the wild west. Kids will enjoy the exaggerations of this legendary character. The book includes a 2 page spread of the Wild West Tribune where the reader will learn all about the legend of Pecos Bill and where it came from and a theory of whether it was based on facts or just a collection of fake lore.
This book also includes discussion questions and writing prompts and a glossary. Kids will enjoy this book and will probably want more information on this character. I am also sure they will be able to invent more adventures for Pecos Bill.

A graphic novel retelling of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle book. When Mowgli was a small child a wolf found him wondering in the jungle and the child, Mowgli followed the wolf back to the wolf’s den. He was raised by the wolves but was always hunted by the mean tiger Shere Kahn. The story takes us through some of Mowgli’s adventure as he takes advice from his great friends Baheegra the panther, Baloo the great bear and Kaa the snake. The story illustration are very good and kids will enjoy reading this book. There might be some concern for the big knife Mowgli carries but it is explained that he carries that knife in the jungle because he has no claws or fangs to defend himself. Includes Law of Jungle, about the author, about the retelling author, about the illustrator, Glossary, Discussion questions and writing prompts. Diaz, Magna

Road to Revolution (Cartoon Chronicles of America )
Bloomsbury see St. Martins 2009 122p 10.99 978-1-59990-371-2 all ages
This graphic novel is packed with action, humor, and the dramatic events of the American Revolution. Since the colonists wanted the British out of Boston, Nick and Penny try to help the cause. Nick (an orphan) and Penny (a daughter of a tavern owner) both lived in Boston. The political climate was tense. Although Nick and Penny come from completely different backgrounds, they have an idea of how to help getting the British out of Boston. It is a great read for young readers in which they will get a good combination of fact and fiction written in a very readable format that will entice even the most reluctant reader. However, they both need to gain the trust of someone in the inner circle of the revolution. Their campaign to oust the British begin when Nick accidentally bumps a British person who in turn knocks Penny to the ground and dirties her shirt. Dislike is instantaneous for both of them until they realize that they are on the same side of the situation. Their escapades will delight the readers as well as imparting historical information. In the epilogue the authors delineate what is fact and what is fiction for the readers. McNeil, Linda

Rod Serling's Twilight Zone (Walker)
In this graphic novel, Rod Serling’s former television series is adapted and supported with tremendous illustrations, as Mark Kneece retells the story of a plane that gets lost en route to JFK, enters a series of different time periods, and spends eternity searching for the correct one. It takes only a few pages to train oneself to read a graphic novel. The smooth-flowing style and the exciting graphics bring one of Rod Serling’s scripts to life again! Who will not want to read a story of terrorism and fear on a plane? In The Odyssey of Flight 33, the passengers are initially unaware of the problems in the cockpit as the pilots lose control and the plane accelerates on its own. The actions switches continually from the cockpit to the passenger area where an irate, emotionally agitated, former pilot is starting to cause trouble. Panic sets in when the plane can’t find JFK airport! The next harrowing moment occurs when they see the city of New York as it was in 1939! It seems that the plane keeps changing time periods, never able to find its course! In another time warp, one sees dinosaurs, and a unstable passenger, fearing his death, jumps from the plane! The pilot must finally explain to the terrified passengers that the plane has veered off course and gone back in time only to realize that when he re-plots his coordinates, he has now gone forward in time. The reader is left to ponder the fate of Flight 33. Rod Serling always leaves you wanting more, and the master is back! What better way to scare than to experience terror on a plane where one has no options but to sit and wonder if he will ever get out of The Twilight Zone. Mark Kneece ends the book with a two-page study of how he adapted the original script, trying to do the least amount of damage in creating a graphic novel yet retaining the uniqueness of Rod Serling’s work.
