Healy, Nick, & Kristen McCurry. Image & Imagination.

Healy, Nick, & Kristen McCurry.  Image & Imagination.  Capstone/Switch Press  2016  unp   $16.95  ISBN 978-1-63079-044-8  ms/hs  Nonfiction  VG

Part journal, part inspiration, this book encourages teens to be creative by providing writing prompts in the form of questions and photographs. For individual purposes there is plenty of space to write on the pages. In the context of teacher use in a classroom or a librarian’s use in a creative-writing club, the book will be very handy for starting discussions and writing sessions. Some of the prompts are personal, such as “Where do you want to travel?” or “What superpower do you wish you had?” Others feed off a photographic image, and ask the writer to describe what the person in the photo is thinking or how the character that is described would act in a certain situation. This collection of prompts would be appreciated by aspiring writers.

Summary: Part journal, part inspiration, this book encourages teens to be creative by providing writing photographs and prompts in the form of questions.

This fabulous book contains almost 150 writing prompts and provides ideas, tips, story starters, examples and more to inspire creative free-writing in readers of all ages. This book is not a workbook, as stated by authors Nick Healy and Kristen McCurry, but rather a stimulus for pleasure writing. There are no rules!

After the introduction and suggestions for using this book, each double-page spread offers a writing prompt juxtaposed with a full-color photograph or illustration. The pictures are carefully presented in a manner that will inspire rather than confine creative minds. Writings can be long or short, and students are encouraged not to follow any procedures for writing. The writing is intended for pleasure only. This wonderful book will appeal to any writer of any age and is surely a helpful resource for teachers of creative writing.

Summary: A compilation of nearly 150 writing prompts, including tips, ideas, story starters, examples and more to inspire creative free-writing for any reader, middle-school-aged to adult.
