Simmons, Walter. Cambodia.

Simmons, Walter.  Cambodia.   Scholastic/Grolier      32p   $22.50      978-0531-120-683-6      elem  Exploring Countries (Scholastic)      Good

In simple-to-read language, Simmons provides a primary introduction to Cambodia, which was a war-torn country for many years. However, this text glosses over the Cambodian War, with only a brief mention of the Khmer Rouge. Instead, the focus is on contemporary Cambodia, where a new government has helped turn the economy around.  This book explores the geography and culture of Cambodia, offering facts and statistics accompanied by colorful illustrations, maps, and photographs.

The interesting facts and sidebars have kid appeal, and readers will enjoy trying to pronounce the Khmer words on page 13, and will find basic facts summarized on single pages or double-paged spreads useful.  A glossary, bibliography, and index round out the volume.

Angkor Wat, one of the oldest religious temples in the world, is very important to the Cambodian people.  Cambodia may be the only country in the world with the outline of a building (Angkor Wat) on its national flag.  Recent warfare has placed this tourist destination and religious icon in jeopardy, but again, no mention of open hostilities is mentioned in the text.

Reluctant readers who must research a country for a report will embrace this book, but will need to consult other materials for a more comprehensive, in-depth source and for a more complete approach to Cambodia’s history.                                   --Hilary Welliver

Written for younger readers, this book provides an overview of the Czech Republic in an engaging manner.  The Czech Republic, while barely two decades old in its current form, has a rich history and culture.  The author presents this in an informative and brightly illustrated fashion that will appeal to younger elementary-age students.  Each double-page spread presents a different aspect of the country, such as "The People" (pages 12-13), and "Holidays" (pages 24-25).  Illustrations are well placed with relationship to the text, and "Fun Facts" and "Did you Know" sections found throughout the text highlight bits of relevant information -- for example, a bit about wild wolves on page 11, and information about Prague on page 27.

Blastoff Readers is an informative collection of titles written for the most primary of elementary students.  There are 56 titles in the series, and given the format of the books, they provide a great introduction to the world’s nations for younger readers.              --Lynn Fisher

The Dominican Republic introduces children to the geography and culture of this country located in the Caribbean.  The Dominican Republic is part of an island shared with Haiti.  Once a very long time ago the island was known as Hispaniola.  Puerto Rico lies to the east of the Dominican Republic.  The capitol of the island is Santo Domingo, and this city dates back to Christopher Columbus.  This island has caves that hold over 6,000 primitive paintings.  Inland you will find the Cibao Valley, whose name dates back to the Taino indians.  You will find whales, flamingos and rhinoceros iguanas.  This book has a fun section of Spanish words. The Dominican Republic serves up plantains, mangu (plantains boiled and then mixed with olive oil, garlic and onions) and habichuelas dulces (sweet beans). The monetary unit is the peso.

The book has plenty of pictures, and could be a great resource for teachers. It includes "Fun Facts", "Did You Know", a few graphs, a map, a glossary, an index, and a list of resources for further information, including web sites.  The series is Exploring Countries: Blast Off! Readers.  Level 5 includes over 50 books on countries.  My only concern is that if a teacher tries to go to the web site www.scholastic.com/librarypublishing, she will have trouble, as the web site is not recognized by the internet.  This needs to be corrected. But the books are great.                                      --Magna Diaz

Simmons, Walter.  El Salvador.  Scholastic/Grolier    32p   $16.10  978-0531-120-694-2  elem    Series: Exploring Countries (Scholastic)   VG

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America.  It is bordered by Honduras and Guatemala and the Pacific Ocean.  It has an active volcano called Santa Ana that in fact did erupt as recently as 2005.  You can find beautiful tropical birds such as the blue and gold macaws, toucans and quetzals.  They do have alligators and crocodiles living in their lagoons. There are 6 million people living in this small country.  Spanish is their official language.  Their children wear uniforms to school.  One of their favorite foods are the empanadas (stuffed pastry) and atol (a thick drink made from boiled corn).

The book is very colorful and full of pictures.  This first book on El Salvador for children will keep them entertained and should encourage them to learn more about the country.  Although the book is small, the author made the most of the information provided.  It includes a section of Spanish words, and it could be a great resource for teachers. It includes "Fun Facts", "Did You Know", a few graphs, a map, a glossary, an index, and a list of resources for further information, including web sites.

This book is an excellent starting place for informing young people about what it is like to live in Morocco and what to expect if one should  travel there.  Major attractions are shown in vibrant color photographs.  There is a short dictionary containing several Moroccan words with their pronunciation and English translations.  Fun facts and graphs draw the eye to quick facts on many pages.  Words that may be unfamiliar to students are  highlighted in bold print with definitions given in the glossary.  At the end of the book, two pages provide the basic facts about the country, including a photo of the flag, the size of the country, the major cities, currency information, major industries, religions and the primary products made in the country.  A further reading section as well as index complete the book.  This is a fine addition to library collections and suitable for social studies and geography projects.  While the publisher indicates the book is aimed at grades 3-5, this book is also suitable for middle-school students up to Grade 8.
