Juettner, Bonnie Diet and Disease

The connection between diet and health is firmly made in
this book that focuses on diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. The
effects of unhealthy eating link not only food types but the lack of vitamins
and minerals to risk of disease. Grades 6-12.        Some of the information is a bit
repetitious from one chapter to another, especially the link to healthy eating
and cutting the risk of stroke, heart disease, cancer and diabetes.  Quick fact
boxes highlight several pages as do color photos. Many photos show older people
when the book is clearly intended for middle and high school students. There are
a couple of missteps in photo placement. On page 51 a photo shows the scales
weighing 100 pounds for what appears to be a teenage girl - with the caption
that a healthy weight is important. This appears just shortly after a one page
insert about the negative effects of anorexia.  On page 81, a photo shows a
culinary student watching a huge open flame erupt from a pan with the caption
that culinary students learn to cook healthy meals when a previous chapter
talked about the risk of cancer from grilled or charred foods. The five main
chapters cover the four preventable diseases of heart disease, diabetes, cancer
and stroke; vitamin and mineral deficiencies and the effect on the body; the use
of diet in preventing disease; organizations promoting health eating worldwide
and how teens can make a difference. Annotated further reading is a pleasant
surprise. The index and list of organizations related to nutrition help the
student researcher.  A solid addition to the nutrition section of any library.
Nutrition and Health contains four titles related to health eating:
diseases, junk food, vegetarianism,  and food myths. Each book is colorfully
illustrated with facts perfect for the student report. Easily readable with up-
to-date facts. Grades 6-12.   McNicol,Lois

Provides basic information about the different types of burns a person can get, as well
as how to prevent them.
Every reader has been exposed to burns
and scalds. Landau provides basic information about different types of burns,
through scenarios and easy-to-grasp information and facts.  These are fleshed
out by helpful photographs that illustrate the information and complement the
text.  Particularly useful is the information regarding treatment and prevention
of burns. The volume provides a good starting point for an overview on the topic
or basic fact-finding for reports.  This is a solid addition to a consumer
health collection.                   Welliver, Hilary

This book covers the topic of strep throat pretty thoroughly for an elementary-age
student, with an explanation of the difference between bacteria and viruses, and
symptoms, transmission of the disease, and treatment of the disease.  This is a
well-written and succinct explanation for younger researchers.  It includes
detailed descriptions of bacterial (as opposed to viral) infections, and
symptoms, transmission, and treatment of strep throat.  The photographic
illustrations are good, and well placed.  There is a glossary, an index, and a
list of multi-media sources for further information.  The web sites cited are
both fairly good.  The glossary could have included more words, such as
bacteria, but it is adequate.         There are other titles in the series about
other diseases and conditions.        Kennedy,  Carol

This well-illustrated book discusses the various types of rashes that children are likely
to get, with tips on avoidance and treatment as well.       This is a good little
book for the elementary set on the types of skin rashes that most children will
encounter ... measles rashes, poison ivy, etcetera.  The illustrations are
photographs, with good visuals on the rashes themselves as well as regular-
looking kids coping with them.  In the Spotlight features zero in on sidebar
issues, and new vocabulary words are bold-faced and listed in the glossary.
This is a good introduction to the subject for younger researchers.  The
sentences are short, the type is easy-to-read, and the format is inviting.  The
websites are pretty good.     This is part of the Head-to-Toe Health series for
elementary students.            Kennedy, Carol
