Mason, Simon. Running Girl.

Mason, Simon.  Running Girl.  Scholastic Press  2016  420p  $18.99      ISBN 978-1-338-03642-8    Hardback  ms/hs  Mystery  VG-BN

What a fun mystery!  The protagonist, one Garvie Smith, has everything to attract readers to share in his adventures. Brilliant, daringly suave but surly and secretive, engaging, quirky and surprising: all these traits combine to give Garvie his over-the-top detective skills. The story begins with a missing girl, Chloe Dow. Garvie once dated her, but his role in her death is not brought into the plot until well into the rising action. Equally important to the plot is Singh, a young, dedicated, newly appointed detective who must figure out who killed Chloe. After Chloe’s body is found, he finds himself one step behind Garvie throughout the entire book. Is it pride that keeps him from collaborating with Garvie, or is it Garvie’s young age of sixteen? Whatever the reason, Garvie works his way through several leads that include a school janitor and a downtown casino where he has found some suspicious behavior, both linked to Chloe’s desire to “grow up too fast”. Even in her death, she comes alive for the reader.  Who doesn’t know girls like her, girls who use their looks and attitudes to further their goal of making it big? Her provocative and daring behavior have seemingly led her to her death. Or, is there something else that the reader does not know that has led to her demise?  Whether or not one figures out the mystery, the reader will be glad that Mason’s books are now available in the U. S. This may be Garvie’s first case, but it won’t be his last!

This book is a wonderful choice for future sleuths, or for anyone who likes mysteries. Good for the U.S. that Simon Mason’s Garvie found his way across the ocean … both middle and high-school readers will enjoy this, and hope for more, soon!

Summary: Sixteen-year old genius Garvie Smith can’t help himself. He uses his unusual deductive skills to try to figure out crimes. In this case, he knows the victim, is driven to find her killer and jumps recklessly into the mystery of who killed Chloe.

Spencer, Octavia. The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit.

Spencer, Octavia.  The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit. (Randi Rhodes Ninja Detective)    Simon & Schuster  2013  224p  ISBN 978-1-4424-7681-3   ms/jr  E-BN
Mystery/Detective

Randi Rhodes’ father is a famous writer.  His books are about a teenage detective who solves many mysteries.  What her father does not know is that Randi has read all of his books and has solved quite a few cases herself. However, that was in Brooklyn where they used to live.  Now, with the move to Sleepy Deer Creek, she is not so sure she can still be a detective, until the day the time capsule goes missing.  Randi mobilizes immediately.  The town has two days to find the time capsule before the bank forecloses on all the town businesses.  This time capsule was supposed to bring a lot of tourists, and that would save the town.  Randi realizes that she must do her homework first to discover who would benefit from the theft of the time capsule.  While quietly and slyly doing the investigation, she discovers two friends whose parents have a lot to lose if the mystery is not solved.  This group of young kids pulls their strength together to figure out a way to save their town.

This novel is a very good, fast and entertaining read.  The character are very likable and full of energy and humor.  The story has all the right elements for a mystery.  I hope we see more of this trio.

Summary: Moving to a new place is always hard, but if that place holds memories of your mom it is even worse!  How can Randi make Sleepy Deer Creek her home?

Twins Xena and Xander, descendants of the world’s greatest detective Sherlock Holmes, are about to take on another mystery tied to their ancestor’s cold case files.  When Alice is kidnapped, Xena and Xander realize that this tiny realm has figured in one of Sherlock’s unsolved cases and set out to find Alice and the missing connections.
American children now living in London, they have assimilated well into the London Multinational School when it is revealed that one of their classmates will be crowned as Princess of Borogovia on her upcoming thirteenth birthday.   Princess Alice enlists the twins to help her find the old letters she had discovered about her ancestors and that have since vanished.  When Alice is kidnapped, Xena and Xander realize that this tiny realm has figured in one of Sherlock’s unsolved cases and set out to find Alice and the missing connections.  They ferret out information from the files of the SPFD, the Society for the Preservation of Famous Detectives, and enlist the help of Andrew Watson, offspring of Sherlock’s associate Dr. Watson, to help with some of the technicalities.   Well written, if a trifle farfetched, the book is filled with exciting action, a convoluted plot, and interesting characters.  Xena and Xander may be this generation’s answer to Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys as they go about trying to solve the few cases that Sherlock could not.  It is sure to be a popular read.              Mystery and detective stories Susan Ogintz
