Mirka, who dreams of slaying dragons, wins a battle with a hideous troll by using her wits. This graphic novel, filled with adventure and adversity, is about a pre-teenaged Orthodox Jewish girl who must come to terms with her conflicted feelings about her stepmother. By using her wits, she vanquishes first a magical pig who she has crossed, and then a nasty troll from whom she wants to win a dragon-fighting sword. The drawings, done in black, white and burnt orange, are very expressive and tell the story in a compelling manner.
There are footnotes that explain some of the Jewish symbolism that is a part of Mirka’s culture. Graphic novel Kennedy, Carol
