Beginning with a discussion of fingerprint physiology, Gardner explains the means by which fingerprints can be characterized and how to make clear fingerprint records and continues by discussing in what way these might be incorporated into a science project. Each continuing chapter presents a hypothetical crime scene and uses the readers’ increasing knowledge as the basis for further experimentation. Gardner later branches out by offering information on lip and tooth prints, footprints, and other tracks. Each experiment contains a list of necessary materials, clear illustrations and photographs, and “Who dunnit” crime scenes. The book ends with the answers, a glossary, bibliography of books and Internet addresses, and an index. While this is, by necessity, a cursory overview of forensic crime work, it is sure to whet the interest of its readers for more information.

This is “CSI” in a book and will entrance young readers. A highly recommended purchase for elementary libraries. Ogintz, Susan

By a series of individual career profiles, each involving a specific case, the jobs of different forensic scientists are examined. A very readable and informative exploration of careers in forensic science. Each career is examined as a case study, with background information about the career, and a demonstration of what each scientific field encompasses. The cases pose a “mystery” and then go on to show how the forensic scientist helps to solve the case. The forensic careers profiled are: criminologist, forensic pathologist, forensic entomologist, forensic chemist, physical anthropologist.

Color photos and interesting text boxes complement the text. A chart at the end of the volume shows the education and salary for each career. The only problem is that it is not continuous, being interspersed with other text. Chapter Notes, a glossary, bibliography and index complete the volume. All in all, a attractive and useful resource for middle and lower high school readers. PN

Forensic and criminal investigations shows are some of the hottest items on the television these days and these books may entice young readers into looking at science experimentation in new and different ways. In the Forensic Science series real criminal cases are cited and then instructions are given for related experiments to be carried out by the "junior forensic investigator." A glossaries and index es are provided.
After the importance of informative text and photos, the most supportive factor of this book is the visual appeal to students and readers. The layout of the various pages is diversified and well balanced between text and color photographs so that concepts are grouped together. The flow and balance of both the text and visuals are integrated to present a very stimulating book for both young and reluctant readers. The writing is lively and and informative and provides a well-balanced look at a fascinating topic. The books contais very clear diagrams of experiments, illustrations, charts, graphs, and tables. They have an excellent glossary with clear explanations of the scientific terms. The author considers safety aspects and is very clear about the necessity for careful work. The books end with an appendix of science supply companies, a bibliography of books for further reading and Internet resources, and an index.
