The connection between diet and health is firmly made in
this book that focuses on diabetes, heart disease, stroke
and cancer. The
effects of unhealthy eating link not only food types but the
lack of vitamins
and minerals to risk of disease. Grades 6-12. Some of the information is a bit
repetitious from one chapter to another, especially the link
to healthy eating
and cutting the risk of stroke, heart disease, cancer and
diabetes. Quick fact
boxes highlight several pages as do color photos. Many
photos show older people
when the book is clearly intended for middle and high school
students. There are
a couple of missteps in photo placement. On page 51 a photo
shows the scales
weighing 100 pounds for what appears to be a teenage girl -
with the caption
that a healthy weight is important. This appears just
shortly after a one page
insert about the negative effects of anorexia. On page 81, a photo shows a
culinary student watching a huge open flame erupt from a pan
with the caption
that culinary students learn to cook healthy meals when a
previous chapter
talked about the risk of cancer from grilled or charred
foods. The five main
chapters cover the four preventable diseases of heart
disease, diabetes, cancer
and stroke; vitamin and mineral deficiencies and the effect
on the body; the use
of diet in preventing disease; organizations promoting
health eating worldwide
and how teens can make a difference. Annotated further
reading is a pleasant
surprise. The index and list of organizations related to
nutrition help the
student researcher. A
solid addition to the nutrition section of any library.
Nutrition
and Health contains four titles related to health eating:
diseases, junk food, vegetarianism, and food myths. Each book is colorfully
illustrated with facts perfect for the student report.
Easily readable with up-
to-date facts. Grades 6-12. McNicol,Lois
