The book provides a brief history of
the Celts and relates seven popular Celtic Myths including “The Coming of the
Tuatha De Danaan,” “The Milasian Invasion,”
“Cuchulainn and Emer,” and “Oisin” as well as three others. This is the latest edition to the new series Mythology Rocks. The
beginning of the book includes a brief history of the Celts and their
significance and relevance in history. Also, included at the beginning is a
glossary of Celtic names and places accompanied by a pronunciation guide. Each
chapter starts with an introduction that provides information as to the origin
of the myth. The myth is then presented followed by questions and answers about
the myth and an “Expert Commentary.” This format and introduction offer a
smooth and understandable transition into the actual myths.
The writing is cohesive, well-constructed, and compelling. The layout and format are consistent and well organized. Catherine Bernard has presented the Celtic Myths authentically, yet uses a language easily understood by young readers. Inclusion of the “Expert Commentary” summarizes and relates the myth to its significance in the culture and the “origins of the universe.”
The illustrations, coloring, and artistic layout of the pages add to the overall effect of the writing giving the reader a visual queue into the mythical ambiance. A general glossary, chapter notes, further reading, and an index conclude the book.
Mythology Rocks! (Enslow) This book is one in the Mythology Rocks series. The series consists of six books at this time. The general theme of the series is mythology. Mythology, Celtic Virginia McGarvey
