Project. Enslow, 2012. 128p $31.93. ISBN 978-0-7660-3954-4 all ages VG-BN
The creation of the atom bomb
was the culmination of WWII. This book
tells the story of the process by which the bomb was developed -- the
scientists and others, both military and civilian, who were involved in its creation
-- and places it in the context of the times. The
history of the atomic bomb, the rationale for its development, and the science
behind it are all covered in this well-written and informative book. Primary-source documents are included,
although more would have been welcome. Images,
including photographs, enhance the text throughout. Most of these images are black and white, and
serve to place the reader in the visual context of the times. The language is accessible to all ages, from
upper-elementary to adult readers, making this book a good primer on the subject
for anyone. The book concludes with a
timeline, chapter notes, a list of further resources (print and web-based), and
an index. The series, Stories in
American History, takes four pivotal events in American history and relates
them in books that are highly readable and informative for all ages.
