McClintock, Norah. Guilty.

McClintock, Norah.      Guilty.     Orca  219p  $12.95      978-1-55469-989-6

McClintock weaves a novel of murder and deception.  When Finn’s father shoots the man who killed his stepmother, he finds out that this is supposedly the same man who killed his mother.  It seems like too much of a coincidence, especially when he meets Lila, the daughter of the murderer, who believes her father is innocent.  Little by little, Finn unravels his own father’s deception.  Finn and Lila ask too many questions, and he barely arrives in time to save Lila from being murdered by his own father.

While readers may suspect or figure out the mystery fairly early in the novel, the layers of deception and Finn and Lila’s discoveries, as well as their budding relationship, will keep readers engaged until the very end.  Alternating chapters are told in the voices of Finn and Lila, giving different views of the same discoveries and conclusions.
This is a good read for older teens, but with a structure that will appeal to more reluctant readers.  It is a good read for reluctant and voracious readers alike.  The characters are compelling and the plot just twisted enough to hold attention, even if the reader has already discovered the murder plot.
