Renner,
Ellen. Castle
of Shadows. Houghton Mifflin 390p $15.99 978-0-547-74446-9 elm/ms VG Mystery/Detective
Five years ago the queen of Quale
disappeared. Now her daughter, Princess
Charlie (Charlotte), has found an unfinished letter her mother started. She is sure the note will help her find her
mother,
but she can’t be sure who she can trust to help her. Her friend Tobias, a gardener’s helper, is
her one friend. He warns her not to show
the letter to anyone else. Surely he
doesn’t mean the Prime Minister, who was a trusted friend of her parents. Wrong choice, Charlie.
Things are not right in the castle. Charlie is hidden away in the attic and neglected in terms of care and education, her father seems to have gone insane and is spending his days building gigantic castles out of playing cards, and the housekeeper and Prime Minister run everything. Charlie has found ways to creep around the castle and escape her attic confinement by traveling across the roofs. As she and Tobias search for her mother, they encounter successes, failures, and stunning roadblocks to their quest. The story includes exciting action by a strong, young heroine. It is well plotted, with lots of derring-do.
Girls in grades 4-7 will enjoy this title.
Unfortunately, this is a 2010 copyright, so it does not meet the guidelines for our list. It would be a good purchase for elementary and middle schools.
