There are many charitable organizations
around the world that work to protect and care for endangered, sick, and
rescued animals. This book talks about
many of the organizations do, and what individuals of all ages can do to help out. In a very “sound bite”-driven text, the author presents all manner of information about wildlie
protection organizations such as Born Free, International Animal Rescue, and the Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Case studies are used to illustrate the great work of these organizations, such as the cases of Mely the
orangutan
(page 22) and Dolo the African lion (page 8). Later sections of the book address lesser-known animal
charities that work with marine animals and with insects. While the brief text-box format of the books is most informative, it can also be
confusing. The eye roams across
every page, and knowing what to read first becomes the question; there is a
very limited flow to this book, but, again, it is very informative. Sidebars
throughout highlight information
that is relevant to adjacent text; for
example, “The Sumatran Orangutan Society” (page 19) and “Young People Can Help Too” (page 35). Full-color photos are
abundant,
and the relevant text is well placed. The book
concludes with statistics, a glossary, “Find out More” (lists of print, media and web resources), and an
index.
