series: Story of the American Revolution
This easy-to-read book provides a
collection of brief biographies highlighting the
heroic efforts of both British and American women during the Revolutionary War. The women who stayed at home tending to their families, keeping
farms and businesses going are
honored, as well as the women who made clothing for
the troops, served as spies, or followed the troops and offered assistance on the battlefield. Both patriot and
loyalist supporters are represented. Color
paintings illustrate the text, and
primary-source quotations are included in many of the entries. Glossary words are highlighted
in the text, with definitions both on the page where they occur as well as in an
addendum glossary. A chart provides
background on the war by defining the terms used to describe those fighting on
both sides. Fast-fact boxes provide
quick information. One even explains the reason why Native Americans supported
the British. A list of resources
for further reading, including a link to the Fact Hound website,
an index,
and a glossary
complete the book. A ten-year timeline places
each woman’s contribution in a linear format. This one would be perfect for reports for
students in grades 3-6. It is a
first choice for school libraries where the American Revolution is studied or
women’s history projects are required.
The series Story of the American Revolution contains six books on battles, women’s contributions, heroes,
causes of the war, weapons of the war and the resulting Constitution and new
nation. All the books include colorful paintings and quick fact boxes and
are appropriate for grades 3-6.
