Kibuishi, KazuPrince of the Elves. (Amulet series, Book 5)  Scholastic/Graphix  199p  $12.99 978--0-545-20889-5  2012  elem  VG-BN  Graphic novel

Upper-elementary students who love fantasy graphic novels will appreciate Prince of the Elves, the fifth installment in the Amulet series.  In this installment, Emily, her brother Navin, and their friends are gearing up to save Cielis against the Elf King.  In order to survive the battle against the Elf King, they must learn about the past and get by Max Griffin, who has stolen the Mother Stone and has joined the Elf King.  This book reveals not only secrets about the stone, including its voice, but also provides readers with Max’s back story and develops more characters for them to enjoy.  Readers begin to understand more about why Max is serving the Elf King and how he got into that position.

The author includes a map at the back, and the gorgeous illustrations will captivate readers and keep them turning pages as they cheer for Emily and Navin and hope they will defeat the Elf King.  Even though Prince of the Elves is book five in the series, it can stand on its own without confusing readers.

For schools who use Accelerated Reader, this title already has a quiz (AR Quiz #153880).
