Monroe, Ayshia. Doin’ It. (Juicy Central series)

Monroe, Ayshia.   Doin’ It. (Juicy Central series)    Saddleback  128p  $9.95
978-1-61651-669-7      2012     hs   VG-BNS            Realistic Fiction

Designed with hi-lo readers in mind, Saddleback’s Juicy Central series explores the urban high-school experiences of a group of best friends.  In Doin’ It, Kiki must move out of the shadow of her popular twin and determine her personal priorities.  Does she intend to become the next valedictorian and earn a college scholarship?  What will happen to her academic dreams if Kiki caves to Sean’s insistence on a sexual relationship?

The slender volume and attractive cover art will win this book many readers.  Kiki’s concerns will ring true with teen readers.  The brief, action-driven novel is only long enough to develop Kiki’s character, but the urban dialogue, setting, and situations will provide a comfortable backdrop to her story.  Readers may shy away from classroom discussions on the controversial but topical concerns addressed in this volume, but the book will provide a springboard for discussion in other settings, especially between individuals or in intimate groups.
