This title introduces young children to
the artist Georgia O’Keeffe. It has
information about her early life and her painting career. Every physical inch of this book is used, even the
inside covers. A map indicates five
areas with eight cities where she lived or worked. There is also a timeline of events in her
life. Several of her paintings are
reproduced and mentioned in the text. Some
periods of her life are illustrated in cartoon format. The text stresses that she was an important
artist at a time when it was rare for a woman to succeed as an artist. Additional material includes a quiz about her
life and the answers. The inside back
cover includes definitions of some words and a brief index.
The highlights of this title are
the painting reproductions. Each gives title, size and the museum where it is
housed. There are also two photographs
of Georgia taken by her husband Albert Stieglitz.
This is an excellent resource for elementary-school libraries, a brief biography and analysis of the art of Georgia O’Keeffe. It introduces her early life and the many places she lived. Several of her paintings are highlighted. Grade 3-5. The Getting to Know the World’s Greatest Artists series includes eight titles. Each features one artist and his or her work.
