Mander, Sanna. History of Women’s Fashion. Candlewick
Press 2015 n.p. $17.99 ISBN 978-0-7636-7962-0 ms/hs Nonfiction VG-BNS
This accordion-folded book, a timeline of women’s fashion from the 1300’s, when the author states that “fashion”
began, through the current day, provides an overview of the key fashion pieces
for women.
While it is a single page, accordion folded, this book also has double-page spreads. The first of these represents the 1300’s thru 1914), and the subsequent ones each represent a decade of women’s fashion. Readers can choose to enjoy the images of each fashion trend following the colorful timeline found on one side of the accordion, or the textual descriptions of the fashions found on the verso of the page. The book concludes with a most informative section entitled “Ten things that started new fashion trends.”
This is the second title in this planned series and, like the first, is an exemplar of this type of book. Beautifully illustrated and very well written, the book is certain to fully engage its readers. Highly recommended for inclusion in any school or public-library collection.
