Using the counting-book format, this
beautifully-illustrated book of poetry discusses various species that are
endangered. The illustrations are by
Stephen Walton. There is a forward by
Virginia McKenna, the actress and founder of the Born Free Foundation, which
works to protect animals in the wild.
Among the animals covered are lions, gorillas, giraffes, tigers,
elephants, and turtles. In addition to
Cotton’s poetry, there is factual information about each animal and a list of
organizations one can work with and learn from in the effort to save endangered
and diminishing species. Truly a
beautiful coffee-table book for any age, as well as a way of introducing young
children to the subject of endangered animals.
