Raja, an orangutan, and John, a boy, grew up as brothers. When divorce separated his family, John realized that he needed to step up and find a better home than a third-rate zoo for his best friend.         This is a very well-written novel about a teen-age boy coming to realize that we as humans have a responsibility to provide care and wellbeing for any animals we remove from their habitats.

John’s father’s job sent him to Sumatra
, where he found a baby orangutan and brought him home to his son as a pet. In time, that baby grew to be an adult with mounting problems. Eventually John’s father tried to give the orangutan to a small zoo. However, when John came to say goodbye to Raja, he realized that people were being fair to a faithful friend. He kidnapped Raja and went on the run. A local vet helped get him in touch with an organization that would help repatriate Raja in his homeland.

Readers will see firsthand the perils of divorce and the grav
e consequences of John’s father’s actions in bringing Raja to America. This is a very well written book that will appeal to many young readers.  It is recommended for any middle- or high-school library, and would make an excellent selection for a basic book list for school libraries.

Summary: Raja, an orangutan, and John, a boy, grew up as brothers. When divorce separated his family, John realized that he needed to step up and find a better home than a third-rate zoo for his best friend.
