This book is a tribute to the star football player and hero Pat Tillman who was killed by friendly fire during his tour of duty in Afghanistan. After 9/11, Tillman gave up his superstar status and a lucrative contract with the NFL Cardinals to serve his country in what he thought was an honorable war. Krakauer captures Tillman’s zest for life as he traces this life up to an unnecessary death. This is a long title in terms of pages (450), but Krakauer’s writing is riveting as he explores Tillman’s life interspersed with details about the history of the Afghanistan war. Krakauer describes the military’s coverup of Tillman’s death and his family’s unrelentless efforts to bring the truth to light. The book includes chapter notes about Krakauer’s research and interviews that helped him compile this title, an extensive bibliography, and an index. This 2010 paperback edition has been updated to reflect new developments and includes new material obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. This paperback reprint is recommended for the Tristate Books of Note 2011 list and should be a must selection for all high school library collections.
