The lives and habits of wild lowland and mountain gorillas are introduced in this picture book. It includes physical characteristics, what they eat, how they raise their young and how they adapt to their environment. The science information in this text is clear concise and accurate. The text is presented at two levels. The main story line is printed in large print and additional information in smaller type. This extends the age range for this title to include younger children. This feature is where the title has problems, young children may find the illustrations frightening. The watercolor illustrations depict many expressions on the faces of the gorillas. Unfortunately the expressions are not predominantly friendly. Several show the silverback expressing anger or aggression. These especially evoke images of King Kong at his worst.
Based on this, the title is recommended for grade 4-6. Theal, Joan
