Mizielinska, Aleksanddra, and Mizielinski, Daniel. Under Earth/Under Sea.

Mizielinska, Aleksanddra, and Mizielinski, Daniel.  Under Earth/Under Sea.  Candlewick Press 2016    106p  $35.00  ISBN 978-0-7636-8922-3  elem/ms  Nonfiction  E-BN

This book explores what can be found below the surface of planet Earth, under the ground, and under the oceans.  Using fantastic and creative illustrations, the authors peel away the layers of planet Earth. Exposed are innumerable scientific, historical, cultural and industrial facts. Sixty-one pages are dedicated to what is under the earth, while 45 pages are dedicated to what is under water. The two sections meet at a double-page spread representing the core of the planet. This format provides a unique opportunity for a way to read this book. Rather than reading from the cover in, one may read the book from the middle (the core) out to each book cover. It is quite fun to read the book in this manner, and it would be the first thing I would mention to young readers. To accentuate the depth of the layer being presented, the background hue of each page ranges from the darkest to the lightest when the reader moves from the planet’s core out to the surface; blues for water, and browns and greens for earth. For any student interested in geography, history, or cultures, this is an excellent overview. While written and published for elementary and middle-school aged children, this is a book that people of all ages will enjoy.
