Samantha White returns to 1928 New York City after being
banished by her cruel stepmother, the Queen of the Follies, several years
ago. Her father, the King of Wall
Street, survived the stock market crash only to pass away under mysterious
circumstances. Samantha is protected by
seven street urchins, while the stepmother is obsessed with a stock ticker that
prints out the words “Another … More Beautiful...KILL.”
Matt Phelan’s moody illustrations capture the film-noir atmosphere of his new twist on a classic fairy tale. The use of color is very deliberate and underscores key elements of the tale. Readers may be drawn to the evocative illustrations, but will find the narration spare. It will have special appeal to reluctant readers, as the entire graphic novel can easily be read in one sitting, in less than one hour.
Summary: Graphic novel re-telling of a classic fairy tale, (i.e. Snow White), set in 1928 New York City.
